Do I need any special software on my computer to view or download files?

No, you do not need special software to view a file. However, if you wish to view, download, or print a PDF version, you need to have a PDF viewing application (for example, Adobe Reader or OS X Preview) installed on your computer.

Internet Browser support varies. Review Browser Support to see if the browser you are using is supported.

How do I download Adobe Reader?

How do I make sure Adobe Reader is being used in my web browser?

  1. Open Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat
  2. Click "Edit"
  3. Click "Preferences..."
  4. Under "Categories:" on the left, click on "Internet"
  5. Check the box next to "Display PDF in Browser"
  6. Click OK.

You will have to restart your browser

How do I print a file?

  1. Click "Download this PDF" above the file
  2. After the file opens up in a new page, click the Adobe Print Icon in the upper left corner. It looks like a printer
  3. Select the name of the printer you would like to print to.
  4. Select the page range you want to print
  5. Change Page Scaling to None
  6. Click OK

Not all sites allow for printing of the entire PDF document. If you do not see any way to download the PDF there may be an alternative way to accomplish printing listed above.

How do I save a file to my computer?

  1. Click "Download this PDF" above the file
  2. After the file opens up in a new page, click the Adobe Save Icon in the upper left corner. It looks like a floppy disk.
  3. Pick where you want the file to be saved.
  4. Name the file to something helpful to you in the future.
  5. Click Save

How do I download PDFs to iBooks on my iPad?

  1. Click and open the handout you want to download on your iPad.
  2. Because PDFs open in Browser you will see a red warning box with a link to the PDF.
  3. Click the link in the red warning box, or click "Download this PDF"
  4. The handout will then open in a new tab.
  5. Switch to that tab. On the top right hand side of the page there should now be an option for you to open the PDF in iBooks.

How to search the online site?

Enter a search term or terms into the search box and click the "Search" button (may be a magnify glass).

The search results will include the following information: Title of file matching search result; Snippet of text that includes highlighted text that matches your search terms

On the search results page some sites will have the option to narrow your search results.

The search engine will ignore parentheses in the search term. To search for a term such as 401(k), you can search for "401 K" to find every instance of 401(k) in the site. You can also search for 401 k, but you will get every instance of 401 and k on a page which may cause you to get more results.

I am having difficulty viewing or downloading a file. What do I do?

If you are having trouble viewing a downloaded file, be sure that you have already installed a current version of Adobe Reader. Click here to download Adobe Reader. Also check that the file has not opened in a different tab of your web browser or in a new browser window.

How can I bookmark a page?

Once logged into the site, you can bookmark and return to any page in the system. This includes any file, search page, index, help/support, etc. Each browser handles bookmarking differently and instructions for each can be found below.

Bookmarks are currently only tied to a browser and computer combination. If you wanted to share bookmarks, the best way to accomplish this is covered in the following two links:

Bookmarking in Internet Explorer 9 (Called Favorites)

  1. Navigate to the page you want to Favorite
  2. Click on the View Favorites, Feeds and History menu button (Alt + C). This Menu button will look like a Star.
  3. Click Add to Favorites menu button (Alt + Z)
  4. Enter a Name for the Favorite
  5. Select, or create, a favorites folder you want this favorite to be located
  6. Click Add

Bookmarking in Internet Explorer 7 and 8 (Called Favorites)

  1. Navigate to the page you want to Favorite
  2. Click Add to Favorites menu button (Alt + Z). This Menu button will look like a Star with a plus.
  3. Click Add to Favorites... in the following drop down menu
  4. Enter a Name for the Favorite

Bookmarking in Firefox

  1. Navigate to the page you want to Favorite
  2. Click Bookmarks menu button. Location of this button depends on what Version of Firefox you are using.
  3. Click Bookmark this Page in the following drop down menu
  4. Enter a Name for the Bookmark
  5. Select, or create, a folder you want this bookmark to be located
  6. Optional: Include tags. This will help with searching through your bookmarks in the future.
  7. Click Done

Firefox Bookmarking Add-Ons

Firefox can be customized further with Add-Ons. Add-Ons are small applications that run inside of Firefox and can add more functionality to the browser. There are Add-Ons for Delicious Bookmarking, Google Bookmarking, Bookmark Sharing, or many more. Find out what will work best for you by going to the Firefox Add-Ons page, and search for different bookmark tools.

Note: Adding extensions or add-ons to your browser is your responsibility.

Bookmarking in Google Chrome

  1. Navigate to the page you want to Favorite
  2. Click Bookmarks button. By default this is a Star in Address bar.
  3. Enter a Name for the Bookmark
  4. Select a folder you want this bookmark to be located, or click Choose Another Folder to create a new one.
  5. Click Done

Google Chrome Extensions

Google Chrome can share bookmarks between multiple machines just by logging into your Google account on each machine while using Chrome. Everything is handled automatically by Chrome. To create a Google account go to https://accounts.google.com/NewAccount?service=chromiumsync&hl=en-US

Chrome uses a built in PDF Reader that is not Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. Follow the steps below to turn off the built in Reader and switch to Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.

  1. Install Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat if it is not already installed
  2. Open Google Chrome
  3. In the address bar, type …
    about:plugins
    that's the word about a colon (:), then plugins
  4. The Plug-ins Tab will open
  5. Scroll down until you see either Adobe Acrobat or Reader.
  6. Click the Enable link
  7. Close the Plug-ins tab and restart Chrome.

Safari Users (Mac Only)

3 most current versions supported.

Mac's come with a PDF viewer called Preview. If you wish to use Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat you may have to adjust settings to get the PDF to view correctly in browser.

Run and Fix Adobe Reader for Safari

  1. Download Adobe Reader.
    • Tested with Adobe Reader 10.1
    • Get it free here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
    • If you already have it, you should be able to move on to step 3
  2. After installing Adobe, Run it
  3. Make sure Safari is closed
  4. Go to "Mac HD" > Library > Internet Plug-Ins
  5. Move AdobePDFViewer.plugin to trash
    • You will need to have admin access to do this
  6. Open the site again in Safari.

If you would like a different experience, or do not want to change the reader you can use Firefox or Chrome as good alternative.
